Samsung Galaxy Player 50 hits the shelves

Samsung downsized and reduced a few specs to make the new Samsung Galaxy Player 50 (YP-G50), like it did with Wave 723, by downsizing the Wave. The Super AMOLED screen is gone also, to further reduce the price of the new portable media player. But even the Galaxy Tab has a TFT screen, so that’s not a new thing in the Galaxy family.
Galaxy Player 50 is really nice, featuring a 3.2-inch WQVGA LCD with multitouch capability, Android 2.1 and 8 or 16 GB of internal storage, with microSD expansion up to 32 GB. It also features a mic, 2 megapixels camera on the back and support for Wi-Fi (802.11n), Bluetooth 3.0, A-GPS and G-sensor. So, basically, it is almost a smartphone. The lack of the GSM antenna isn’t that bad, for the Facebook and Twitter generation and with free Wi-Fi hot-spots all around.
Galaxy Player 50 feels like an Android smartphone, when using it. Runs smooth and fast and it has Google Maps Navigation on board, along with the Android Market and all other standard Android apps.
The virtual keyboard is not that good, but that’s not a big issue.
If you’re an old timer and you like having dedicated devices rather than all-in-ones, Galaxy Player 50 could be the best alternative, so far, to the iPod Touch. The Android 2.1 Eclair is fully utilized by this player and the support for DivX files makes your life easier, skipping the need of converting when transferring multimedia files on the player. Basically, it is a Galaxy S smarphone, but without the cellular connectivity, Super AMOLED LCD and a downgraded camera.
YP-G50 is expected to be available soon on the market and the nice ad you can see after the break confirms that. Funny thing is that some retailers already sell it, in France, at €199 for the 8GB version and €249 for the 16 GB version. Pretty fair prices i might say.
